Welcome to the Masakhane Hub

Welcome to the Masakhane Hub

The Masakhane Hub is found in the middle of the Masakhane community, alongside the Masakhane soccer field and the Good Hope ECD. This site became the home of the Overstrand Disaster Management Covid Relief programme in April 2020 which began as a collaboration of municipal, private and NGO programmes to serve the community at the start of the Covid 19 Pandemic and lockdown. The Masakhane Hub has become a community hub where many gather to warm their bellies with nutritious meals prepared either on the big outdoor fire or in the well-equipped container kitchen. Community members and children engage with each other, catch up on the latest Covid 19 protocols and news, check in with the Grootbos Foundation team and coaches, and leave with smiles and full tummies. Overstrand Disaster Management gradually wound down its involvement from the collaborative effort in September 2020 once the worst of the Covid 19 Level 5 lockdown passed. Thank you to everyone who participated and  helped to serve the local community! Grootbos Foundation continues to run a Covid Relief programme from this site and to serve the greater Gansbaai community.

Our beautiful labyrinth vegetable and herb garden is flourishing and the soup kitchen team loves to pick fresh produce to add straight into great, big cooking pots – a great example of nutrients going directly from the earth to the plate!

Alongside the container kitchen,‘The Classroom’ container has been established transforming the hub into a safe haven where children come to complete their homework as well as gain free access to the internet for projects, research, and tertiary applications. In this way, the Masakhane Hub continues to adapt to serve the needs of the community, at the request of the community. Help and homework guidance is offered by Shereen, an enthusiastic and engaging tutor loved by all the children who come to The Classroom.

Next door to the Covid Relief kitchen is the Good Hope ECD and the i-MED vision & i- MED africa health-e-centre. The i-MED africa team educates parents and caregivers about the treatment and prevention of early childhood diseases and everyday ailments through natural home remedies and education, using plants and herbs that can be grown in the garden. The i-MED africa health education team also assists Masakhane community members with vaccination registration and information.

The Good Hope ECD is a well-run Early Childhood Development centre where children play, learn and grow in the care of trained facilitators. This ECD is run by a Masakhane community-based management committee and staff who serve the youngest community members, giving children the best beginning in life.

The Masakhane community stands tall and continues to rise to the challenges of the Covid 19 Pandemic. Thank you to the Overstrand Municipality, Disaster Management, iMed Vision and iMed Africa, RTL Wir Helfen Kindern, donors, volunteers, local businesses and individuals who helped develop the Masakhane Hub. Without you, Grootbos Foundation would not be able to provide ongoing support to our local communities.

It is wonderful to see how the seeds sown in Masakhane have grown into a hub of flourishing activity and hope.
