Grootbos Environmental CentrE - Welcomes Stellenbosch Students
Where better for 3rd year environmental science students to immerse themselves in nature than at the new Research Centre at the picturesque Witvoetskloof Farm on Grootbos Private Nature Reserve? Stellenbosch University has sent 24 students from the Botany-Zoology Department, and the Conservation-Entomology Department to stay in the newly renovated Grootbos Research Centre, a back-packer style facility 10 kilometers from the R43 in a beautiful, wild valley. Guided by Stellenbosch staff and the Grootbos Foundation Conservation Team, these 3rd year student groups conduct research into topics of their choice to kick-start their final year of undergraduate study covering a broad array of research topics, including ‘Plant-pollinator interactions between sugar birds and Protea repens’, ‘Hydro-chaos plasticity of tadpoles’, and ‘Sexual selection of Cape river crabs’. What a super way to promote conservation training and development in young South African scientists. The Grootbos Research Centre is fully committed to promoting and facilitating research that improves conservation of the Cape Floral Kingdom, and the animals, plants and insects that co-exist in this most unique part of the Overberg.
